Journal Quilt 2007

"Colours of the Indus"

Now that the Houston Quilt Festival has opened I am able to share my 2007 Journal Quilt with you. In the past we have made 9 quilts throughout the year. You can see all of my Journal Quilts here on my website. This year was a little different. We made one Journal Quilt equivalent in size to 4 journal quilts.

Creative Quilting techniques used: fabric painting (p. 145); beading (p. 218); hand dye (p.237)

The source for this quilt was the Colours of the Indus exhibition I visited a few years ago. I loved the pink and blue colours of the textiles from that area and the lovely teardrop or Paisley designs also from the area.

I hand dyed the background fabric, masked the geometric and teardrop design with freezer paper and masking tape and free motion quilted the non masked areas. I then over painted the quilted area with blue acrylic paint using a roller. I hand beaded the piece.

Taking part in the Journal Quilt project over the past 4 years has helped me grow as an artist. Had I not participated in the project I would never have had the courage to enter my first Judged/Juried competition this year.

All three journals are wonderful in the photographs on your website. I can hardly imagine how thrilling it would be to see them "for real".

I love the purple! I also enjoy overpainting after quilting -- it gives such a nice texture.

That is a very beautiful quilt. I will go and have a look at the rest shortly.

Well done, Carol.
I like the idea of over painting after you have done some work on it. I wouldn't have thought of that. I sometimes do that with my quilting... I have shisha mirrors and haven't been sure what to do with them. Lovely......

This is my second comment here Carol. Did I miss the second part of your post which mentions Colours of the Indus or is it extra? I saw that fantastic exhibition too and have the book. I must go and look at it again.
